What is aviationcardiology.com?

aviationcardiology.com is an organisation providing services for the cardiological assessment of professional and private pilots in their pursuit of certification. It does not carry out routine medical examinations although it does have links (listed below) with some Authorised Medical exminers (AME's)in the local area. It liaises closely with the UK Civil Aviation Authority in the UK as well as other authorities and specialists both at home and overseas. It also provides all the further invasive and non-invasive investigations which may from time may be required. It is based both at the JAA appointed hospital in the UK - St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, KT16 0PZ (20 minutes from London Heathrow airport and 35 minutes from London Gatwick airport) and also at the Nuffield Hospital, Shores Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4BY which is close by. It operates within the private sector although UK Nationals with JAA or UK CAA licences are entitled to specialist advice and certain investigations, free of charge, at the Civil Aviation Authority, Aviation House, Gatwick Airport South, West Sussex, RH6 0YR - telephone 01293 567171.

The service provided is predecated by the requirements of the relevant licencing agency. Sometimes a specific investigation, only, is requested but most commonly there is the need for a clinical consultation which will include a resting electrcardiogram. The consultation and electrocardiogram, which is always by appointment, will normally take 45 minutes and a report will be given.

Further investigations available include:
  • Resting electrocardiography and report
  • Exercise electrocardiography
  • 24 hour ambulatory (Holter) monitoring
  • Event recording
  • Echocardiography
  • 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
  • Tilt testing
  • Myocardial perfusion imaging (this is also available through a participating centre in London)
  • Coronary angiography
  • Electrophysiological study and intervention
  • Diagnostic imaging, including ultrasonography, CT and MRI scanning
Following a consultation and/or investigation the report will express an opinion which will reflect standard practice within the context of the prevailing UK CAA/ JAA regulations. The final decision rests with the individual certificatory agency concerned

Appointments may be arranged by telephone, fax or email and it is suggested that at first contact a copy of the note from the licensing agency/referring practitioner is supplied which should give details of the problem and the investigations required, if any. How to contact us
